Sharon Prather-Martens, affectionately known as Chef Shay, began her passion for cooking in the kitchen of her mother, learning to cook for her brothers and sisters. She graduated from Saddleback College with a degree in the Fine Arts and began working in the Food Services for Disneyland. A gifted artist and illustrator she has learned to combine her artistic talents with the fine art of cooking. While living with her husband in France, she attended specialty classes at the Cordon Bleu of Paris. She traveled France extensively learning about the regional and provincial foods. On returning to the United States she continued her education. One of the specialties that drew her interest was Microbotic cooking in which she attended the Orlando School of Microbotic Cooking. Chef Shay culminated her education by receiving her Certification from the Westlake Culinary Institute. Throughout her career she has taught culinary classes at the Simi Valley Park and Recreation District, the Simi Valley Senior Citizen Center and was a restauranteur with Scheck and Shay’s Diner. Chef Shay in working for Trader Joes had been responsible for the Food Demonstration menus is also in charge of the food demonstration program and planning of menus for Trader Joe’s. She is proud to say that she has donated her talent to the Simi Valley Education Foundation in which her culinary services were auctioned of for as $3000.00. Chef Shay while continuing to work for Trader Joe’s also consults, is a private chef, caterer and lecturer.
